We didn’t just learn a new library; we learned the framework that powers tech giants like Meta and Tesla. Moving from vanilla JavaScript to a full framework like React felt like trading in my bicycle for a spaceship! 🚀
Learning React fundamentals is a huge milestone, and seeing the speed and power of component-based architecture made me feel like a total rock star. 🎸 Let’s dive into what I learned, how I built a fully functional weather app, and why this framework is a game-changer!
What I Learned: The React Core Concepts 🧠
React changes the way you think about building a user interface. Instead of writing one massive HTML page, you break everything down into reusable, small pieces called components.
1. Components: The Building Blocks
- The Big Idea: In React, everything is a component—your header, your buttons, even the little weather icon! This makes your code cleaner and much easier to maintain.
- What I Covered: We learned how to create functional components, pass data down using Props (Properties), and organize multiple components to build complex views. This component-based thinking is key!
2. States: Making Apps Dynamic
This was my biggest “AHA!” moment! State is how React handles data that changes over time (like a user typing in a search form or the temperature updating).
- The Power of State: When a piece of State changes, React automatically re-renders only the parts of the page that need updating. This makes our apps super fast!
- What I Covered: We mastered defining and updating States using hooks, managing user input with React Forms, and using Conditional Rendering to show different things based on the state (e.g., showing a “Loading” message or the actual forecast).
3. Getting External Data with AJAX
A modern app isn’t useful without data! We used AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) to fetch live information from external sources.
- Real-World Skills: This is a crucial skill! We learned how to use libraries like
axiosto fetch data from APIs (specifically the OpenWeather API and the SheCodes Weather API) and then use that data to update our component States. - Working with APIs and seeing that data populate my screen felt incredibly rewarding. Every bug you fix feels like a win, especially when it involves getting that API call just right!
Project Spotlight: The Fully Functional Weather App 🌤️
The final project was where all these concepts beautifully came together: building a React Weather Application. This wasn’t just a static page; it was a powerful, data-driven tool.
Key Features I Built:
- City Search Engine: A functional search bar using React Forms and States to capture user input.
- Live Data Integration: Using AJAX to integrate with the weather APIs and display current weather, temperature, and conditions.
- 5-Day Forecast: Dynamically looping through the forecast data and displaying it using multiple specialized components.
- Unit Conversion: Implementing unit conversion (Celsius/Fahrenheit) using React Events and dynamic states—a great feature to show off those skills!
It was such a cool way to use everything we learned, from setting up the project using Vite (since Create React App is now deprecated) and using the Terminal and Node JS, to deploying it live using Netlify hosting!

React has a steep but rewarding learning curve. Here’s my down-to-earth guidance to help you make this leap:
- Embrace the Terminal: Get comfortable with the Terminal and commands like
npm installandnpm run dev. Using tools like NPM/Yarn for external components is essential. - Focus on Components First: Before worrying about State or Props, just build a few simple components (like a
Headeror aButton). Let’s dive in and break that UI down! - States are Life: Understand that only the data that changes should be held in State. Try making a simple counter app where the number is held in state and updates when a button is clicked.
- Debugging is Your Friend: Don’t fear the errors! React has great debugging tools, and learning to read those messages (and the Netlify debugging log!) is how you truly level up.
