My Coding Journey So Far

If you’re new here, I’m a beginner coder who’s fallen in love with programming through SheCodes. I’ve tackled HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Git, and earlier Python topics like lists and dictionaries. today’s Python workshop took me on a whirlwind tour of dates, APIs, and debugging, and I’m thrilled to share how these tools are leveling up my coding game. Slightly sidetracked from my GitHub Foundations course, I’m soaking up every moment of this Python adventure! 😊

Mastering Dates in Python ⏰

Python’s datetime module is like a magic wand for handling dates and times. I learned how to display, format, and convert dates, which is perfect for building apps like calendars or reminders.

What I Learned:

  • Importing Datetime: I started with import datetime to unlock date and time functions.
  • Current Date and Time (Unformatted): Using datetime.datetime.now(), I displayed the raw current date and time, like 2025-06-24 20:40:00.123456.
  • Formatting Dates: I used strftime() to make dates pretty, like datetime.datetime.now().strftime("%B %d, %Y %I:%M %p") to get “June 24, 2025 08:40 PM”.
  • Converting Timestamps: I converted a Unix timestamp (like 1624550400) to a date using datetime.datetime.fromtimestamp(1624550400).strftime("%Y-%m-%d"), which output “2021-06-24”.

  • Converting to JSON: I used data = response.json() to turn the API response into a Python list of dictionaries, then accessed data like data[0]["title"] to get a post’s title.
  • SheCodes Weather API: I used an API key with the SheCodes Weather API URL, adding parameters like ?query=London&key=MY_API_KEY&units=metric to get weather data for London in Celsius.
  • Accessing API Data: I parsed the JSON response to display details like temperature or forecast descriptions.
